RINA RAJINESAITE'S DECLARATION OF INTENTION No. 503095, sworn before the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York on 2 October 1941 — identified and given to this archive by Prof. Dr Ruth Leiserowitz, 27 August… Her declaration of intention, sworn at New York on 2 October 1941, gives her as RINA RAINE RAINESAITE, a student of twenty, BORN AT KAUNAS ON 18 FEBRUARY 1921, whose LAST PLACE OF FOREIGN RESIDENCE WAS KAUNAS and who EMIGRATED FROM YOKOHAMA, JAPAN, entering at San Francisco on 9 DECEMBER 1940 aboard the President Taft. Sugihara wrote her onto this register at Kaunas on 2 August 1940, four months earlier. The register's own line was damaged and reads only 'ina ajinesaite'; the declaration supplies the whole name and the whole journey. Prof. Dr Ruth Leiserowitz, who found it and gave it to this archive, adds that she married in New York in 1942.

Sent to the archive by Prof. Ruth L… Her own declaration of intention, and it fills a line the register left almost empty. No. 809 is written Rajinesaite and the compiled list gives her no age, no occupation and no destination at all. She was RINA RAINE RAINESAITE, born in Kaunas on 18 February 1921 — nineteen years old when Sugihara wrote her visa on 2 August 1940 — a student, unmarried. She left from Yokohama and landed at San Francisco on 9 December 1940 aboard the SS President Taft, and by October 1941 was living on West 95th Street in New York and swearing that she meant to stay.
