- List of Refugees, Vilna, 1940 — JDC Archives, New York, collection AR 33/44, file 00876. The contemporary register of Polish Jewish refugees in Lithuania, running to more than nine thousand numbered entries; the fullest independent check…
The 1940 Vilna refugee list has, at entry 126, Guta Alpert, born 1906 at Polajki, who came from Polajki; her children Frejda, Sora, Nison and Rywka Alpert follow her on the list, the same four children the register names with her. - "California, San Francisco, Passenger Lists, 1893-1953", FamilySearch — index entry for Guta-Jachna Alpert, 1940: born about 1909, Poland. Digitised from NARA microfilm publication M1410 (passenger lists of vessels arriving at San Franci…
FamilySearch's index of the San Francisco passenger lists, read by the archive on 20 September 2026, has Guta-Jachna Alpert, born about 1909 in Poland, arriving at San Francisco in 1940. The register's compiled line gives 1909, and the two agree. The name occurs once on the register, and a Polish-born passenger landing at San Francisco in 1940 fits the route through Japan, so the entry is taken as this person's under the archive's rule of 19 September 2026 for records from the route. - Manifest of alien passengers, SS President Cleveland, sailing from Kobe 10 October 1940, arrived San Francisco late October 1940 (NARA, passenger lists of vessels arriving at San Francisco, M1410, film 365; read on FamilySearch's copy)
The President Cleveland sailed from Kobe on 10 October 1940, took shore leave at Honolulu on the 19th and landed at San Francisco in the last week of October; its manifest has the Alpert family on its first five lines: Guta-Jachna, 31, a housewife, reading German, born at Połonka in Poland, and her children Rywka, 14, Nison Lipa, 13, Chaja-Sora, 11, and Frejda, 1, each on a quota visa, Nos. 2527 to 2531, issued at Tokyo on 9 October 1940, the day before the ship sailed, last residence Vilna. The register's line gives the same four children by name and age, and the Vilna refugee list on this page has the family at Vilna in 1940. - National Archives and Records Administration, Alien Case Files (Record Group 566), catalog descriptions read through the NARA Catalog API
The National Archives holds an alien case file for Guta Jachna Alpert, born 1 July 1909 in Poland, who entered the United States at San Francisco on 25 October 1940 (file A4542344, NARA catalog NAID 608647098). The name and the birth year agree with the register's line, and the port and date of entry are the route's.
