Where this comes from
Manifest of alien passengers, SS President Cleveland, sailing from Kobe 10 October 1940, arrived San Francisco late October 1940 (NARA, passenger lists of vessels arriving at San Francisco, M1410, film 365; read on FamilySearch's copy) The manifest of the President Cleveland, Kobe 10 October 1940 to San Francisco 25 October, lists Rosa Kowarska Lewitan, aged 43, a widow and a teacher, Polish, born at Dołhinów, speaking Polish, German and English, who had lived in the United States from 1935 until 5 June 1939 and travelled on a re-entry permit issued at Washington in 1939; she was going to her brother-in-law Naftole Feinerman at 868 East 7th Street, Brooklyn, and the inspector's note records her admitted on 25 October 1940 as a returning immigrant. The purser's Lewitan is one letter from the register's Lewiman, a double surname that occurs once on the register, on a sailing of Sugihara's visa holders from Kobe in the month the route ran, which is the basis on which the archive takes a name from a record of the route. The register gives her no age to test. National Archives microfilm of the San Francisco passenger lists, read on FamilySearch's copy; the page was pointed out by David Rosen, October 2026.
