What is known

A Lithuanian passport bearing a Japanese transit visa issued at the Consulate of Japan in Kaunas (Sugihara consulate). The holder, J. Pomeranc, born 5 December 1895 in Vilnius, was permitted transit through Japan, evidenced by the Japanese entry/transit stamps including one at Tsuruga (Fukui) dated Showa 15 (1940). A family photograph appears on the document.

The register's compiled line gives 1896, and the two agree. The name occurs once on the register, and a Polish-born passenger landing at Seattle in 1940 fits the route through Japan, so the entry is taken as this person's under the archive's rule of 19 September 2026 for records from the route.

  The Heian Maru sailed from Kobe in the middle of October 1940 and reached Seattle on 31 October; the tenth page of its manifest, thirty names, all admitted, has the Pomeranc family: Jankiel Pomeranc, aged 44, married, a rabbi, Polish, born in Poland, last residence Vilna, on a non-quota immigration visa for ministers of religion issued at Kaunas on 26 June 1940, with his wife Bejla, 42, and their children Aron Ber, 14, a student, Rachela, 6, Vela, 4, and Michla, 2. The register's line gives the wife Bejla of 42 and the four children by the same names and ages.
