Where this comes from
- Manifest of alien passengers, SS President Cleveland, sailing from Kobe 10 October 1940, arrived San Francisco late October 1940 (NARA, passenger lists of vessels arriving at San Francisco, M1410, film 365; read on FamilySearch's copy)
The President Cleveland sailed from Kobe on 10 October 1940, took shore leave at Honolulu on the 19th and landed at San Francisco in the last week of October; its manifest has Beila Kaplun, aged 48, a housewife, reading Russian, Polish, born in Russia, last residence Vilna, on a visitor's visa of 27 July 1940. The inspector's notes beneath the list say her hearing was continued for investigation in New York, and that she was denied admission on 12 December 1940 and appealed. What became of the appeal the sheet does not say. The register's line gives her age as 48 and the same name; the register's ledger lost the first letter of her given name.
