  The Sydney Jewish News of 12 December 1941 reported that Dr Benzion Horowitz, a native of Kraków who took his doctorate in agricultural science at the Jagiellonian University and worked on tobacco breeding for the Polish state monopoly, had arrived in Sydney in September on the Japanese ship Kasima Maru, had been elected chairman of the Zionist cultural society Tarbuth and appointed Hebrew teacher to the Newtown Synagogue, and would join the University of Sydney as a research officer from 1 January 1942. The register's Bencion Horowitsch, an agronomist of 37 on the compiled list, is the only Bencion/Benzion Horowitz on the register, and the Kasima Maru of September 1941 was the Kobe refugees' ship.

  Bencion Horowitsch was born at Kraków on 12 February 1903, at 7 Bożego Ciała Street, the son of Izaak Horowitz and Debora Reidel née Klein, according to the Jewish birth register of Kraków, which enters him as Benzien Horowitz. The match rests on more than the name: the Kobe community's list gives this line the same birth year and birthplace.
