Kauno regioninis valstybes archyvas (Kaunas Regional State Archive), fond 66 — the Kaunas City Municipality Passport Department, 1919-1940 — inventory 2, file 8224: the internal passport card of BURSTEINAS, Jokubas, son of Boruchas, made… A Kaunas passport card of 14 June 1940, held at the Kaunas Regional State Archive and published on Lithuania's ePaveldas portal, names JOKŪBAS BURŠTEINAS, son of Boruchas — a farmer living in Kaunas, born 11 October 1911 at Karaliaučius (Königsberg) in East Prussia, Jewish, unmarried, of medium height with black hair and grey eyes. It carries his photograph and his signature, over the stamp of the Kaunas City Burgomaster. He is a candidate for this line and the archive does not say he is the same man. What agrees: the given name in its exact Lithuanian form, the surname, residence at Kaunas, Lithuanian citizenship, and a card issued six weeks before this visa. He is also the only Jokūbas among some thirty-nine Kaunas Buršteinas cards and the only one on the whole portal. What does not: nothing on the card mentions a transit visa, Japan, Curaçao, a foreign passport or a departure, and this register line gives no birth year and no birthplace to test him against. Being born at Königsberg is unusual for a Lithuanian citizen and might as easily point away as toward.
